DISCOVER NATURE
Competition for Schools in the Arab World

Organized by AL-BIA WAL-TANMIA (Environment & Development magazine)
in cooperation with:

Discovery is an interesting key to knowledge. When we explore nature, we get closely acquainted with its beauties and resources, and nurture our enthusiasm to preserve it

DISCOVER NATURE is a competition organized by AL-BIA WAL-TANMIA (Environment & Development magazine) for all schools in the Arab World. It takes students to nature, to discover plants that grow in their area, identify their species, characteristics and benefits.

Plants are everywhere. They are a source of food, medicine and oxygen, and a shelter for birds, insects and other creatures. However, most of the green cover in our region has vanished due to construction, deforestation, fires and overgrazing. Investigating the remaining plant species will strengthen students' ties to nature, increase their affection towards life thriving in it, and promote their determination to recover the green beauty almost lost.

Description of the Competition
DISCOVER NATURE aims at developing a sense of investigation in students, by inviting them to explore their local environment.

Each school will provide a report, prepared by its environment club or a team comprising environmentally active students and guiding teachers. The report should include a list of plant species that grow within a range of 500 meters from school, common and scientific names of each plant, its photograph, and a short description of its height, fruits, blooming time, habitat, etc. Reference books are useful in this regard, as well as consulting local inhabitants, especially the elderly.

Conditions of Participation

  1. Each school will deliver one report, with photographs, of no more than 12 pages, A4. It shall also deliver a poster (60cm x 90cm) depicting a summary of the report and photos of some plants. If sent by mail, the poster should be designed to be folded.
  2. The name of the school, its address, names and classes of the team members, should be stated clearly in the report
  3. Contributions should be sent to AL-BIA WAL-TANMIA magazine by 30 April 2003
